Alibaba Entertainment Group, a subsidiary of Alibaba Group that includes Alibaba Pictures, Alibaba Music and Youku Tudou, recently opened its company headquarters in Pasadena, CA to increase its proximity to Hollywood and the center of America’s entertainment industry. When developing its new space, Alibaba Group wanted its entertainment hub to have a vibrant, fun and flexible workplace that reflects its focus on creativity, culture and collaboration and hired design firm HOK to bring its vision to life.
ABET Laminati recently chatted with HOK’s Mike Goetz who served as the lead designer for the project. Mike used ABET’s 406 Lucida Magnetico magnetic white board laminate on the walls of several board rooms. When asked why he chose this product, Mike said, “We wanted to provide a surface where the creative teams could storyboard and manage their timelines. Often during the storyboarding process, people like to print images and move them around the story board so we thought it would be handy to have a white board that was also magnetic.
That surface went over very well with the client. Every time we’ve gone back, the walls are covered with art. There’s never a blank space. What I like about it from a design perspective is that it’s durable, you can’t see seams, and I haven’t noticed any of the ‘ghosting’ that you would get with white board paint.”
In addition, Mike used ABET woodgrain 385 in Sei Due finish on all the millwork in the pantry areas and was able to match the laminate with a floor finish and wall covering to make it look like a wood box. “It’s one of my favorite spaces; I like the way it turned out. It’s a pantry lounge off the reception that’s like a ‘jewel box space’ and the woodgrain laminate added warmth to juxtapose the white minimalist look of the rest of the office,” says Mike.
